about

"Southern Light" brought together musicians from three different worlds: jazz bassist/keyboardist Karl Mansfield, classically trained flute player Wendy Karden, and folk and new-acoustic multi-instrumentalist Mark Nelson. They performed extensively in Oregon and gathered a large following.

A live show on the influential LA radio station KRCW led to some major label interest, and so they entered the studio in late 1989.

"Waves of Light" was recorded during a particularly creative year. The initial recording sessions focused on arrangements folk and Celtic music - as you can hear in "Gaviotas "and the bonus track "The Faery Hills."

After a six month leave for touring, the band returned to the studio with a stronger focus on jazz and world music. Drummer Tom Freeman and Saxophonist Matt Taylor were brought in, and acclaimed jazz vibraphonist Fred Raulston guested on two tracks.

Sadly, the album was never picked up by a record label and the band did not have the resources to self produce and distribute a CD in this pre-digital age.

Thanks to BandCamp, you can now hear these songs for the first time.
